Edrington Sells The Famous Grouse and Naked Malt to William Grant & Sons to Exit from the Blended Scotch Market
Edrington, the renowned owner of premium whisky brands such as The Macallan, has announced a significant shift in its business strategy. The Glasgow-based company is selling its blended Scotch whisky brands, The Famous Grouse and Naked Malt, to William Grant & Sons, a family-owned whisky producer. Edrington’s decision marks a pivotal moment as it exits the blended Scotch whisky category to focus on the ultra-premium spirits market.
A Major Deal in the Scotch Whisky Sector
The sale of The Famous Grouse and Naked Malt represents a major transaction in the Scotch whisky industry. It is currently pending approval from regulatory bodies, including the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority. While the financial terms of the transaction have not been disclosed, it is clear that this sale represents a strategic move for Edrington, allowing the company to concentrate on its high-end spirits portfolio.
Edrington emphasised that both brands are “well-positioned to continue to succeed” under the ownership of William Grant & Sons, which has a long history of producing award-winning whiskies and spirits.
Edrington’s Strategic Focus on Ultra-Premium Spirits
Scott McCroskie, Edrington’s chief executive, explained the rationale behind the sale:
“This decision is driven by our strategy to focus on our core strengths and the growth opportunities in the ultra-premium spirits category. We consider this the right moment for Edrington to exit the blended Scotch category.”
McCroskie also expressed confidence in the future success of The Famous Grouse and Naked Malt under William Grant & Sons’ ownership, praising the brands for their performance during Edrington’s stewardship. The Famous Grouse has remained a beloved brand in the blended Scotch category, while Naked Malt has built a strong reputation among whisky enthusiasts.
The deal is being executed through Edrington’s subsidiary, The 1887 Company Limited, and aligns with the company’s broader mission of being the best at crafting exceptional ultra-premium spirits.
William Grant & Sons: A New Home for The Famous Grouse and Naked Malt
William Grant & Sons is no stranger to Edrington’s portfolio, having previously supported Edrington in its 1999 acquisition of Highland Distillers, which included The Macallan and a joint venture on The Famous Grouse. Now, the family-owned company is preparing to welcome these two iconic blended Scotch brands into its portfolio.
In a statement, William Grant & Sons highlighted the rich history of The Famous Grouse, which was founded in 1896 in Perthshire, Scotland:
“The Famous Grouse is a quality blended whisky and a much-loved brand that would add to William Grant & Sons’ award-winning portfolio.”
The company also sees significant potential for innovation and international growth with The Famous Grouse, especially in emerging markets. William Grant & Sons, which already boasts a portfolio of renowned whiskies, is eager to explore new opportunities for these brands.
Edrington’s Core Focus on The Macallan and Single Malt Brands
With the sale of its blended Scotch brands, Edrington is sharpening its focus on its core portfolio, which centres around The Macallan. This world-famous single malt whisky brand is the crown jewel of Edrington’s portfolio and remains the company’s central focus. Alongside The Macallan, Edrington continues to support other single malt brands, including Highland Park and The Glenrothes, as it pivots to meet the growing demand for premium and ultra-premium spirits.
Edrington employs more than 3,300 people worldwide, with a significant portion of its workforce based outside the UK. The company’s principal shareholder is The Robertson Trust, which has donated £367 million to charitable causes in Scotland since its establishment in 1961.

Strong Financial Performance Amid Changing Market Dynamics
Edrington has seen strong financial results in recent years. In July, the company reported a 6% increase in underlying annual pre-tax profits, reaching £411 million, alongside an 11% growth in core revenues, totalling £1.165 billion for the year ending March 31. At the time, McCroskie remarked that Edrington’s performance ranked among the best in the spirits industry.
However, McCroskie also acknowledged that the outlook for the industry is changing. He noted that the “post-Covid spirits boom” had ended abruptly, and the company is now preparing for slower growth due to economic pressures anticipated in the second half of the financial year. This strategic pivot toward ultra-premium spirits and away from blended Scotch may be a reflection of those evolving market conditions.

Investing in the Premium Whisky Market
Edrington’s decision to sell The Famous Grouse and Naked Malt signals a deliberate move toward premiumisation, as the company shifts its focus to the ultra-premium spirits market. It is a strategy that has worked well for Chivas Brothers over the past year.
For William Grant & Sons, this acquisition represents an exciting opportunity to add two iconic blended Scotch brands to its portfolio, with potential for innovation and international growth.
