CASK STORAGE & OWNERSHIP

Whisky cask ownership involves more than the initial acquisition. It requires secure storage, correct documentation, and a clear understanding of how casks are managed throughout their maturation. Our role is to make this process straightforward, transparent and well-supported, ensuring that every cask we introduce is stored safely and recognised legally in the owner’s name.

This page explains how our storage arrangements work, the responsibilities of ownership, and how we support clients through each stage of the process.

Storage and ownership are central to whisky cask investment, and are explained in more detail in our main guide.

Secure, Regulated Storage

All casks introduced through UKV International AG are stored in HMRC-regulated bonded warehouses. We work closely with our UK Duty Representative, Elite Wine & Whisky Storage Ltd, an official warehouse keeper authorised under the strict WOWGR licensing system. Understanding bonded storage also means understanding HMRC rules, including excise warehouse approvals (WOWGR). WOWGR licence explained.

Storing casks in a regulated bonded environment ensures:

  • proper handling and maturation
  • accurate warehouse records
  • compliance with UK excise and storage regulations
  • secure, monitored facilities
  • clear proof of ownership

This structure provides peace of mind for clients and supports the long-term stewardship of their casks.

Ownership & Documentation

When a client acquires a cask, the warehouse issues a delivery order in the client’s name. Read more about delivery orders here.

This document is an essential part of cask ownership. It serves as:

  • legal recognition of the owner
  • evidence of transfer from the previous holder
  • confirmation that the cask is held under the correct warehouse account
  • a record required for any future movement or sale

We guide clients through this process so they understand what each document represents and what records they should retain.

If you are considering acquiring a new cask, our Portfolio Advice service can help you understand suitability and long-term considerations.

Costs and Warehouse Fees

Elite Wine & Whisky Storage Ltd provides long-term storage services for all casks held on behalf of our clients. Storage fees are straightforward and billed annually.

Typical charges include:

  • £30 per year – warehouse account administration
  • £60 per cask per year – bonded storage
  • 0.7% of purchase price per year – insurance (plus VAT)

These fees cover secure storage, handling, and record-keeping. We explain these costs clearly so clients know what to expect each year.

Warehouse Location

Client casks are stored at The Queen Elizabeth Bond, a secure bonded warehouse facility located near Edinburgh.
Many clients value the ability to:

  • arrange warehouse visits
  • view their casks in person
  • access a transparent storage operation

Visits can be organised upon request, subject to warehouse availability and appropriate notice.

Condition, Maturation & Warehouse Management

Whisky casks mature slowly over many years, and warehouse conditions play a key role in long-term development. Bonded warehouse environments are managed to maintain suitable conditions for evaporation, temperature and humidity.

During storage, clients may request:

  • re-gauging (to assess updated volume and strength)
  • sampling (subject to warehouse approval)
  • re-racking discussions (moving spirit to a different type of cask)

We help coordinate these processes and explain when they may be appropriate.

Insurance

Warehouse insurance covers the cask against typical risks associated with storage in a bonded environment.
The fee is calculated annually as a small percentage of the cask’s purchase price.

We explain the scope of cover and help clients understand the types of risks that are included.

Long-Term Stewardship

Cask ownership is a long-term undertaking. Over time, clients may wish to:

  • continue maturing their cask
  • explore re-gauging or sampling
  • consider bottling
  • discuss exit or sale options

Our team is available to support these decisions, explain the practical considerations, and help coordinate with the appropriate warehouse or trade partners when required.

When the time comes to consider your next steps, our Exit Strategies page explains the options for selling, bottling or transferring your cask.

Client Responsibilities

While the storage environment is regulated and managed professionally, cask owners should understand their responsibilities, including:

  • maintaining up-to-date storage fees
  • keeping copies of all ownership documents
  • understanding HMRC’s rules regarding movement and storage
  • recognising that casks must remain in bonded storage unless bottled

We explain each of these obligations clearly so clients remain fully informed.

Clear, Structured Communication

Our approach to storage and ownership is based on clarity. From acquisition to ongoing account support, clients receive straightforward explanations and documentation so they can make informed decisions throughout the lifetime of the cask.

Should you require further information about bonded storage, warehouse processes or ownership procedures, our team is available to help.
