The Glenlivet Unveils its Oldest Whisky Ever: 55-Year-Old Eternal Collection
In celebration of its 200-year legacy, The Glenlivet has unveiled its most ambitious and oldest expression to date: The Glenlivet Eternal Collection, First Edition, 55 Year Old.
This remarkable release marks a significant milestone for the iconic Speyside single malt Scotch whisky brand, which has been a symbol of excellence and originality since its founding in 1824.
The Glenlivet Eternal Collection
The Glenlivet Eternal Collection, First Edition, 55 Year Old, is a limited release to celebrate 200-years of excellence. Crafted from a seasoned sherry cask and matured for over five decades, this precious single malt offers an intricate flavour profile and an astonishingly long finish, making it one of the rarest whiskies in existence.
Only 100 bottles of this exclusive expression have been made, each embodying meticulous attention to detail and extraordinary design. The limited-edition release is expected to be highly sought after by collectors and whisky connoisseurs alike.
Stunning Sculpture Display
To complement the release of this exceptional whisky, The Glenlivet collaborated with pioneering computational architect Michael Hansmeyer.
Known for his innovative approach to blending architecture with digital technologies, Hansmeyer created a striking sculpture to house the 55 Year Old single malt. The sculpture draws inspiration from the distillery’s location in the Spey Valley, particularly the flowing River Livet, which has played a central role in the history of The Glenlivet.
Crafted from hand-sculpted jesmonite and rose-gold plating, the sculpture’s intricate design mirrors the eternal essence of the river, symbolising the timelessness of The Glenlivet. The decanter itself is housed within this beautiful, modern art piece, further solidifying the union between art and whisky craftsmanship.
Michael Hansmeyer, explained his vision for the sculpture:
“My work captures the intersection of architecture and the arts. It is a laboratory for experimenting with new possibilities, and that is where I saw the harmony in collaborating with The Glenlivet. Weaving threads of intelligent technologies to create something that escapes conformity and classification to celebrate such an aged whisky has been a thrill.”
A Taste Experience Like No Other
The Glenlivet’s Cask Master, Kevin Balmforth, oversaw the final maturation of the 55 Year Old whisky. Describing the whisky’s unique taste profile, he said:
“A medley of autumn fruits, sun-drenched Seville oranges, and sticky dates enveloped by the spiced warmth of cinnamon and nutmeg on the nose, alongside the sweet, warming flavours of homemade blackcurrant jam and vanilla fudge, balanced with zesty citrus notes on the palate.”
This complex yet harmonious flavour profile, combined with its long maturation, creates a tasting experience unlike any other, making it a true masterpiece for the palate.
The Future of The Glenlivet Eternal Collection
The 55 Year Old single malt whisky is the first release in The Glenlivet Eternal Collection, a new range of highly collectible whiskies.
Each release, to be unveiled annually, will be aged for an additional year and accompanied by an original art form created by a different visionary artist. This approach makes the collection not just a whisky connoisseur’s dream, but also an evolving celebration of artistry and innovation.
As Kevin Balmforth, The Glenlivet Cask Master, added:
“The 55 Year Old is the highest age statement Scotch ever released from The Glenlivet Distillery. Combined with Michael’s incredible talent, it tells of the timelessness of The Glenlivet. The Eternal Collection represents a monumental moment for whisky connoisseurs and luxury appreciators, epitomising The Glenlivet’s commitment to excellence within Scotch innovation.”
A Unique Auction for a Worthy Cause
To further commemorate this landmark release, The Glenlivet has partnered with Sotheby’s to create a one-of-a-kind auction lot. A bespoke 55 Year Old single malt whisky, accompanied by a unique Hansmeyer sculpture, will be available at auction from 18th October to 1st November 2024.
All proceeds from this auction will benefit the National Trust for Scotland, an organisation dedicated to preserving Scotland’s natural and cultural heritage.
