Bacardi Invests Heavily in Whisky Distilleries and Warehousing to Fuel Premium Scotch Expansion
Bacardi, the family-owned spirits powerhouse, is making headlines with a significant investment in its Scotch whisky production capabilities.
By enhancing its facilities and introducing new, sustainable technologies, the company is strategically positioning itself to meet the growing global demand for premium and ultra-premium Scotch. This investment is part of Bacardi’s forward-looking approach to support and expand its whisky portfolio, which includes some of the world’s most esteemed single malts.
Modernising Poniel’s Blending and Maturation Centre
Bacardi has recently expanded its Poniel blending and maturation centre in Glasgow, a state-of-the-art facility that now boasts three additional ageing warehouses.
Situated on a sprawling 200-acre site, these new warehouses increase Bacardi’s storage capacity by over 15% while implementing an innovative and more efficient design. This expansion will allow Bacardi to meet the rising demand for quality Scotch while optimising storage efficiency, a critical factor for the ageing process in whisky production.
Aultmore Distillery: Sustainable Growth and Enhanced Efficiency
A key part of Bacardi’s investment is focused on the historic Aultmore Distillery in Speyside, which has been producing whisky since 1897. The distillery recently completed a multi-million-pound upgrade aimed at improving efficiency, safety, and sustainability. Key highlights of the project include:
- Energy and Water Efficiency: New technology has been installed to capture, compress, and reuse vapour generated during distillation, significantly enhancing the distillery’s water and energy efficiency. This innovative approach will not only reduce waste but also contribute to a greener production process.
- Prepared for a Hydrogen Future: Aultmore’s new boiler is designed with future fuel adaptability in mind, specifically the potential to switch to hydrogen power. This flexibility underlines Bacardi’s commitment to adopting renewable energy sources as the industry progresses toward sustainable operations.
- Upgraded Facilities: The expansion includes a new tun room, still house, boiler house, and a closed-loop cooling tower, all of which contribute to a more efficient production process while ensuring the high-quality standards for which Aultmore is known.
Modernisation Efforts at Macduff Distillery
Improvements are also underway at Macduff Distillery, the birthplace of The Deveron single malt whisky.
Bacardi’s investment in Macduff has focused on modernising mashing equipment and implementing “high gravity mashing,” a technique that reduces water usage and energy consumption. Additionally, a new air-conditioned control room has been introduced, providing better temperature control, which is crucial for consistent production quality.
Bacardi’s Long-Term Commitment to Scotch
For over 25 years, Bacardi has operated five distilleries across Scotland—Aultmore, Aberfeldy, Royal Brackla, Craigellachie, and Macduff—each with its own unique heritage and tradition.
Keith Hogg, Bacardi’s Vice-President of Supply Chain in Europe, describes the company’s vision succinctly: “Our investment in Aultmore and Macduff distilleries and our Poniel blending and maturation centre is an important step in the bold plans we have for our premium and ultra-premium whiskies.”
Bacardi’s recent investments not only highlight the company’s commitment to quality and tradition but also its embrace of modern technology and sustainable practices to support Scotch whisky’s future growth.
Investing in a Premium Whisky Future
Through these strategic investments, Bacardi is reaffirming its dedication to producing premium and ultra-premium Scotch that meets evolving global tastes. It is a move that many global drinks businesses are following, including:
- Chivas Brothers’ premiumisation strategy gave them a strong 2024
- The Balvenie created a new premium collection called A Collection of Curious Casks
- Beam Suntory invest £150m in Easy Ayrshire whisky facility
