Glen Scotia Unveils Its Oldest Whisky Yet: The Elements of Campbeltown Release Number One – Air
Glen Scotia, the historic Campbeltown distillery, has unveiled a landmark in its whisky-making journey: a 50-year-old single malt, the oldest expression in its long and storied history. Titled Elements of Campbeltown Release Number One: Air, this release is the first in a new series celebrating the elemental forces that shape Glen Scotia’s spirit and surroundings.
A New Collection Rooted in Nature and Heritage
The Elements of Campbeltown Collection draws inspiration from the ancient Celtic five-fold knot, symbolising the harmony between air, water, fire, and earth—united at the centre by the spirit. Each chapter of the series will focus on one of these natural elements, highlighting how it influences the whisky’s character.
The inaugural release, Air, is a tribute to the maritime environment of Campbeltown, Scotland’s smallest whisky-producing region. Known for its rich distilling heritage and windswept coastal climate, Campbeltown imparts unique nuances to the whisky, subtly shaping its profile over time.

Distilled in 1973, Bottled in 2024: A Half-Century in the Making
Distilled in 1973 and bottled at a natural cask strength of 42.3% ABV, Glen Scotia 50 Year Old was fully matured in refill American oak hogshead casks. This careful maturation preserves the distillery’s classic style while allowing the coastal air to leave its mark.
The result is a whisky layered with complexity and elegance—offering aromas of flaked almonds, vanilla fudge, salt crystals, and glazed apple tart. The palate reveals a creamy, sweet-salty texture balanced with white pepper, powdered ginger, and a lingering coconut finish. This is a single malt shaped by time, tradition, and the elemental power of air.
Craft and Vision: The Art of Long-Term Maturation
Michael Henry, Master Blender at Loch Lomond Group, reflected on the responsibility of releasing a whisky of this age:
“Responsibility for whisky of this age, where the passage of time shapes and moulds the character of the spirit, is a privilege… Bringing this whisky to its optimum condition has been through knowing the character of the spirit, its interplay with the wood, and thoughtful cask management.”
Glen Scotia Master Distiller Iain McAlister added:
“While times may change, the effects of the natural forces endure through the decades. Air is a masterpiece sculpted by the elements for half a century, its scent a symphony of natural elements and timeless tradition.”
Artistic Collaboration with Gina Parr
To commemorate the release, Glen Scotia partnered with UK artist Gina Parr to create a bespoke artwork inspired by the element of air and the atmospheric setting of the distillery’s historic dunnage warehouse.
Using oil paint and drawing from her sensory experience at Glen Scotia, Parr created a piece that adorns the cabinet doors housing each decanter. The design mirrors the sea-salted air of Campbeltown and the layered spirit vapours that define the warehouse’s atmosphere.
Parr shared:
“Glen Scotia 50 Year Old started life in the same year I began my own creative journey. This beautifully matured whisky mirrors my art—rooted in history, shaped by dedication, and inspired by nature.”
Beautiful Decanter
Each decanter is housed in a handcrafted solid ash and birch cabinet that resembles an artist’s easel. Coastal tones and warm amber hues reflect the Campbeltown surroundings and the whisky within. Inside, the luxurious white leather-lined interior holds a bespoke Glencairn crystal decanter, designed exclusively for this release.
A delicate band around the base represents the element of air, while a Celtic knot crowns the heavy brass stopper. The decanter is presented alongside a hardback book detailing the story of this extraordinary single malt.
