The Macallan Unveils Two Exquisite Whiskies Honouring Artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh

The Macallan has unveiled two stunning single malt whiskies under a new limited edition collection titled The Tree of Life, inspired by renowned Scottish artist and architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The release celebrates the artist’s deep connection to nature and artistic evolution, presenting a rare 46-year-old expression alongside a vibrant younger counterpart.

A Tribute to Nature and Artistic Legacy

Mackintosh, best known for his contributions to the Arts and Crafts movement and distinctive architectural style, often drew inspiration from the natural world. The Macallan’s Tree of Life Collection honours this vision, specifically referencing Mackintosh’s 1902 stained-glass masterpiece The Spirit of the Rose.

The collection includes two single malts: the ultra-rare Tree of Life 46 Years Old and the elegant Art of the Flower. Each expression celebrates a unique phase in Mackintosh’s life and artistic journey.

The Macallan Tree of Life 46 Years Old: A Rare Masterpiece

A Moment of Reconnection

The centrepiece of the collection, The Macallan Tree of Life 46 Years Old, draws direct inspiration from the moment Mackintosh retreated from architecture at the age of 46 to embrace the tranquillity of the countryside. It was during this period that he produced some of his most celebrated nature-inspired works.

Limited to just 112 Lalique decanters worldwide, this single malt was matured in Sherry-seasoned oak casks laid down in 1979, culminating in a complex and layered whisky experience.

A Work of Art Inside and Out

Encased in a handcrafted Lalique crystal decanter with a rose-inspired stopper, the bottle sits within a sculptural piece that echoes Mackintosh’s signature metalwork designs. The visual presentation is as exceptional as the liquid it holds.

Tasting Notes & ABV

According to Master Whisky Maker Kirsteen Campbell, the whisky is “a vibrant and complex expression of The Macallan matured in Sherry-seasoned oak casks,” with tasting notes including:

  • Tropical fruits charred over smouldering peat embers
  • Rich wood spice
  • Antique oak, reminiscent of Mackintosh’s woodworking craft

Bottled at 46.2% ABV, this release is available by invitation only, with pricing provided upon application.

The Macallan Art of the Flower: A Celebration of European Elegance

The second expression in the collection, The Macallan Art of the Flower, pays homage to Mackintosh’s artistic ventures across Europe and his continued fascination with natural motifs. Again, drawing from The Spirit of the Rose, this whisky captures the floral delicacy and architectural grace present in his later works.

Crafted with Artistic Freedom

Whisky Maker Steven Bremner emphasised the creative latitude afforded during the blending process, allowing the team to “tap into our entire inventory” to select only the finest casks that had reached peak maturity.

The whisky was matured in Sherry-seasoned European oak casks, producing a rich and nuanced flavour profile:

  • Raisin and fig
  • Polished oak
  • Cherry and almonds
  • Delicate fruit blossoms

Bottled at 50.4% ABV, Art of the Flower will be available from 6 May 2025 via The Macallan Estate and luxury retailers including Harrods, The Whisky Shop, and Berry Brothers & Rudd.

More Than Whisky: A Celebration of Art and Nature

In addition to the whiskies themselves, The Macallan has released a series of short documentary-style films to accompany the collection. These films explore the shared philosophy between the distillery and Mackintosh, where reverence for nature fuels both creativity and craftsmanship.

Creative Director Jaume Ferras explained, “The Macallan and Charles Rennie Mackintosh share a reverence for nature, a guiding force in artistry and craftsmanship, and this is showcased within The Tree of Life by The Macallan across both releases.”
