The third edition of The Distillers One of One charity whisky auction once again proved that rare whisky and generosity form a remarkable blend. Held on Friday, 10 October 2025, at the grand Hopetoun House in Edinburgh, the biennial event — hosted in partnership with Sotheby’s — raised an astounding £2.9 million ($3.9 million).

Of this total, £2.3 million ($3.1 million) came directly from hammer prices, more than doubling pre-sale estimates and setting 30 new auction records. All proceeds went to charity, continuing the event’s legacy of using Scotch whisky’s finest creations to fuel social change.

Since its launch in 2021, the auction has raised a total of £6.6 million ($8.4 million), with 100% of hammer proceeds supporting the Youth Action Fund — an initiative helping disadvantaged young people across Scotland access education, training, and employment opportunities.

One-of-a-Kind Whiskies Command Record Prices

This year’s sale showcased 39 unique Scotch whisky lots from 35 distilleries, each specially crafted for the event. Bidding was fierce — both in person and online — with some jumps of up to £140,000 as collectors competed for these extraordinary one-off releases.

The Glenlivet Leads the Sale

Topping the auction was The Glenlivet SPIRA 60 Year Old 1965, which achieved £650,000 ($871,358) — a new record for the distillery and far surpassing its £60,000–£110,000 estimate. The 1.5-litre spiral decanter, hand-blown by Glasstorm’s Brodie Nairn, was the highest-selling lot of the night.

The Glen Grant Eternal 77 Year Old

Another star was The Glen Grant Eternal 77 Year Old 1948 — the distillery’s oldest-ever release — which sold for £400,000 ($536,220), five times its low estimate and setting yet another auction record.

Port Ellen Prism 46 Year Old

The revived Port Ellen Distillery also captured attention with its Prism 46 Year Old 1978, fetching £375,000 ($502,706) — more than double its low estimate. Marking the distillery’s 200th anniversary, the whisky came in a 1.5-litre decanter encased within a 100-kilo glass sculpture by German artist Wilfried Grootens.

Other Highlights and Brand Records

Several other whiskies shattered expectations:

  • Ladyburn One of One 2025 Marilyn Monroe by Sam Shaw 58 Year Old – £225,000 ($301,624), a new record for Ladyburn.
  • Laphroaig Capsule 40 Year Old – £125,000 ($167,569), tripling its low estimate and setting a brand record.
  • KANDOBLANC Dragon in Clouds 60 Year Old – £106,250 ($142,433), doubling the brand’s previous record.
  • The Glendronach Arias in Time Collection – £93,750 ($125,695), featuring the distillery’s oldest-ever whisky.

In total, 90% of all lots exceeded their high estimates, with 30 distilleries achieving new brand records — including Glenfarclas, The Glendronach, Bruichladdich, Glen Moray, and Tamnavulin.

A Celebration of Craft and Community

According to Christopher Coates, editor-at-large of Whisky Magazine, the auction was “off the scale” in terms of quality:

“The very rarest whiskies from Scotland’s most prestigious distillers were presented with extraordinary craftsmanship. Some lots had been in development since before the last auction — it was a masterclass in dedication.”

He described the atmosphere in the room as “electric”, as each new hammer strike exceeded expectations and drew applause from attendees.

Industry Leaders Reflect on the Impact

In the official release, Grant Gordon OBE, Chairman of The Distillers’ Charity, expressed pride in the Scotch whisky community’s unity and generosity:

“The Scotch Whisky industry continues to come together to raise incredible amounts in support of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, helping them achieve their ambitions and strengthen our communities.”

He noted that between January 2022 and September 2025, the Youth Action Fund had already helped 2,619 young people secure employment, apprenticeships, or further education.

Beanie Espey-Geraedts, Managing Director of The Distillers One of One, called the results “a humbling demonstration of generosity”:

“This success is the result of a collective effort across the whisky industry — passionate individuals working to create meaningful change. Knowing that this will directly benefit Scotland’s youth makes it even more special.”

From Sotheby’s, Jonny Fowle, Global Head of Spirits, praised the industry’s creativity and passion:

“The quality and innovation on display were simply outstanding. This year’s extraordinary number of brand records is a testament to the excellence of the Scotch whisky community.”

The Scotch Industry United in Purpose

Since its inception, The Distillers One of One has become the world’s most prestigious charity whisky auction, bringing together major Scotch houses — including Chivas Brothers, Diageo, William Grant & Sons, Campari Group, and Suntory Global Spirits — alongside smaller independent producers.

Funds from this year’s auction will continue to power the Youth Action Fund through six partner organisations: Aberdeen Foyer, Action for Children, FARE Scotland, Street League, ENABLE Works, and The Talk About Trust — reaching more than 3,700 young people across the country.

A Lasting Legacy of Goodwill

The 2025 Distillers One of One auction not only broke records but reinforced a vital message — that Scotch whisky’s true value lies not only in its age or rarity, but in its power to create lasting social impact.

As Coates aptly concluded:

“The distillers don’t need to do this — it’s not commercial. They do it because it’s the right thing to do. Great Scotch is about long-term thinking, and that same ethos drives their commitment to making a difference.”

With record-breaking bottles, remarkable generosity, and a shared sense of purpose, the Distillers One of One continues to prove that great whisky can do truly great things.
