Yamazaki 55: Japan’s Oldest and Most Valuable Whisky Goes to Auction

Whisky collectors and connoisseurs, take note: the iconic Yamazaki 55 Years Old is back in the spotlight. Considered Japan’s oldest and most valuable whisky ever bottled, one of these ultra-rare expressions is set to hit the auction block, with Bonhams forecasting a price that could exceed US$250,000.

This exceptional release is part of Bonhams’ “Whisky Immortal: The World’s Most Coveted Spirits” auction series, running from May 31 to June 12.

The Story Behind Yamazaki 55

First released by The House of Suntory in 2020, only 200 bottles of Yamazaki 55 were produced. Half remained in Japan, while the others were distributed to select markets including the United States, the United Kingdom, China, and Taiwan.

Crafted over decades, Yamazaki 55’s origins date back to 1960, when Suntory founder Shinjiro Torii distilled the original spirit. In 1964, the whisky was transferred to white oak casks by his son, Keizo Saji, who later became the second master blender. This careful transition between casks laid the foundation for its complex, mature character.

In August 2020, a bottle of Yamazaki 55 made headlines when it fetched HK$6.2 million (approximately US$795,000) at Bonhams Hong Kong—setting a record as the most expensive Japanese whisky ever sold at auction.

An Artistic and Cultural Masterpiece

Yamazaki 55 is not just a whisky; it’s a celebration of Japanese craftsmanship and tradition. The bottle is an artwork in itself, featuring:

  • Crystal glass engraved with “Yamazaki” in elegant calligraphy
  • Handmade Echizen washi paper wrapping the bottle’s neck
  • Kyo-kumihimo braided cord from Kyoto securing the closure
  • A bespoke case made of native mizunara wood coated in Suruga lacquer

According to Suntory’s fifth-generation chief blender, Shinji Fukuyo, who collaborated with Tojii on the whisky’s development:

“While I often view other extra-aged whiskies as art, I consider Yamazaki 55 to be more like a Buddhist statue: calm and mysterious, requiring time to truly enjoy the inner beauty.”

This upcoming auction marks the first time a complete bottle with full original packaging will be offered in the United States.

Tasting Notes

The flavour profile of Yamazaki 55 is described as deeply evocative and complex, with:

  • Nose: Fragrant sandalwood mingled with well-ripened fruit
  • Palate: Sweetness layered with subtle bitterness, delivering a long, contemplative finish

Each sip is a journey through the decades, offering a sensory experience that mirrors its lengthy maturation and historical significance.

The Origins of Japanese Whisky: Where It All Began

The Yamazaki Distillery, where this legendary whisky was born, has a story of its own. Founded in 1923 by Shinjiro Torii, it was Japan’s first and oldest malt whisky distillery.

Inspired by Scotch whisky but determined to craft something uniquely Japanese, Torii chose Yamazaki, a misty valley on the outskirts of Kyoto, for its ideal climate and pure water sources, including the Katsura, Uji, and Kizu rivers. This area, once known as Minaseno, is also famous as the home of Sen no Rikyu, the master of the Japanese tea ceremony.

This distinctive microclimate became the basis for what is now known as the “Suntory Maturation” process—balancing nature and tradition to refine every drop.
