Scotch Whisky Records £5.4 Billion Worth of Exports in 2024

Scotch Whisky, a cornerstone of Scotland’s heritage and a global trade powerhouse continues to showcase its dominance on the international stage.

The latest figures from the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) reveal that exports of the famed spirit reached an impressive £5.4 billion in 2024. While this demonstrates the industry’s enduring strength, it also highlights a shifting and increasingly challenging market landscape.

Scotch Whisky Export Performance in 2024

In 2024, the Scotch Whisky industry exported the equivalent of 1.4 billion 70cl bottles worldwide, translating to 44 bottles per second. This staggering number reinforces the spirit’s popularity across diverse markets, from traditional whisky strongholds to emerging economies where consumer preferences are evolving.

Comparison with 2023 Figures

Despite these remarkable figures, Scotch Whisky exports by value saw a 3.7% decline compared to 2023. However, in terms of volume, exports rose by 3.9%, signalling a shift in purchasing patterns.

More bottles were being sold, but at a lower average price, likely reflecting economic pressures and fluctuations in global demand.

Key Export Markets and Shifting Trends

One of the most notable developments in 2024 was India reclaiming its status as the largest Scotch Whisky export market by volume, surpassing France with 192 million bottles imported. This underscores India’s growing appetite for whisky, fueled by an expanding middle class and evolving consumer preferences.

Meanwhile, the United States retained its long-held position as the highest-value export market, with Scotch Whisky exports to the country totalling £971 million in 2024. The American market remains crucial, with premium and aged expressions driving significant revenue.

Factors Influencing Export Trends

The decline in export value reflects a combination of economic and regulatory pressures. Inflation, increased production costs, and a 14% rise in domestic taxation over the last 18 months have all impacted pricing. Additionally, shifting trade dynamics in key regions such as the European Union and North America have contributed to market volatility.

The industry is also contending with regulatory burdens, such as the introduction of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), which places additional financial strain on distillers. With global trade uncertainty persisting, these factors could continue to shape export trends in the coming years.

Long-Term Growth Since Pre-Pandemic Levels

Despite the challenges of 2024, Scotch Whisky has demonstrated resilience since the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic. Compared to 2019, exports have risen by 10% in value and 7% in volume. This growth trajectory highlights the industry’s ability to navigate economic fluctuations while maintaining strong global demand.

Challenges Facing the Scotch Whisky Industry

The road ahead remains complex for Scotch Whisky producers. Excise duties in the UK remain among the highest in the world, with taxation accounting for a staggering 70% of the average bottle’s price. This heavy tax burden, coupled with rising costs for raw materials such as cereals and energy, places significant financial pressure on distillers.

Additionally, the looming impact of EPR regulations adds another layer of cost. Industry leaders have voiced concerns that without government intervention, these financial burdens could stifle investment, innovation, and market expansion.

Government Support and Industry Demands

In response to these challenges, the Scotch Whisky Association has called upon both the UK and Scottish governments to implement measures that will support the industry’s continued success. Their demands include:

  • Reducing excise duty to alleviate financial strain on both producers and consumers.
  • Reassessing the cost of EPR to ensure distillers are not disproportionately impacted.
  • Accelerating trade negotiations to break down tariff barriers in key markets like India.

By addressing these concerns, the government can create a more favourable environment for Scotch Whisky to thrive both domestically and internationally.

The Strategic Importance of Scotch Whisky

Beyond its export figures, Scotch Whisky plays a vital role in the UK economy. The industry supports thousands of jobs across Scotland, from distilleries and bottling plants to global sales and marketing operations. It also strengthens the UK’s trade position, accounting for 90% of Scotland’s food and drink exports.

Furthermore, Scotch Whisky is a key driver of tourism, attracting enthusiasts from around the world to Scotland’s historic distilleries. Its cultural and economic significance cannot be overstated.

Future Outlook for Scotch Whisky Exports

Looking ahead to 2025, the Scotch Whisky industry remains cautiously optimistic but acknowledges that headwinds persist. Continued economic uncertainty, shifting consumer behaviours, and global trade tensions will all influence future performance.

However, the industry’s resilience, innovation, and enduring global appeal provide a strong foundation for sustained success. With the right government support and strategic trade policies, Scotch Whisky can continue to thrive as one of Scotland’s most prized exports.
