Indian spirits heavyweight Radico Khaitan has taken a decisive step towards entering the world of Scotch whisky, with its board approving plans to establish a wholly owned subsidiary in Scotland. The move marks a significant expansion of the company’s international strategy and underlines its long-term ambitions in premium whisky production.
A New UK Subsidiary Takes Shape
The proposed subsidiary, to be named Radico Khaitan Scotland Ltd, will be incorporated in the UK and owned 100% by the parent company. The plan was formally disclosed in regulatory filings with India’s stock exchanges, including the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the BSE.
Once established, the Scottish arm will be responsible for a full range of whisky-related activities, including distillation, maturation, storage and trading of Scotch whisky and other spirits, all in line with UK regulations.
Strengthening Access to Mature Supply Chains
Radico Khaitan has long been active in the global whisky ecosystem, particularly as a major importer of matured malt spirits used in its blended whisky portfolio. As demand for its whiskies continues to grow, the company expects its reliance on imported malt to increase significantly in the coming years.
By establishing a presence in Scotland, Radico aims to secure more reliable and cost-effective access to distillation and maturation infrastructure. According to company representatives, the initiative is designed to support long-term supply security rather than immediate large-scale production.

Exploring Distillery Ownership in Scotland
A central element of the strategy involves the potential acquisition of an operating Scotch whisky distillery. While no assets are currently under active evaluation, the new subsidiary would be positioned to acquire and operate a distillery should an attractive opportunity arise.
In addition to distillery ownership, the plans also include investment in distillation equipment, maturation facilities and bonded storage, laying the groundwork for long-term inventory creation and whisky ageing in Scotland.
Strategic Benefits Beyond Production
Radico Khaitan has identified several strategic advantages to establishing a base in Scotland. These include access to fresh-made spirit, the long-term value creation that comes with maturing whisky inventory, and proximity to both the UK and European markets.
The company has emphasised that these ideas remain at an early stage, with the board resolution intended to provide flexibility to explore opportunities rather than commit to immediate acquisitions.

Financial Structure and Investment Approach
While the total investment value has not been disclosed, Radico Khaitan has stated that it will initially subscribe to the minimum capital required to establish the subsidiary. Further investment would be considered as opportunities develop and the business plan evolves.
This cautious, phased approach reflects the company’s intent to balance ambition with financial discipline as it enters the highly competitive Scotch whisky sector.
Building on Strong Financial Momentum
The announcement follows a strong year for Radico Khaitan, which has reported record turnover and profits across multiple quarters. Rising domestic and international demand has helped fuel growth across its premium and mass-market brands alike.
This financial momentum provides a solid foundation for international expansion and long-term investment in whisky maturation, a process that requires both patience and capital.
A Portfolio Rooted in Whisky Innovation
Radico Khaitan has steadily built its reputation as a whisky-focused producer over the past decade. The launch of Rampur Indian Single Malt in 2016 marked its entry into the premium segment, followed by Royal Ranthambore in 2021 and Sangam World Malt Whisky in 2023.
Alongside these, the company’s broader portfolio includes gin, vodka, rum and brandy, as well as several high-volume “millionaire brands” such as 8PM and 8PM Premium whiskies, Contessa Rum and Magic Moments Vodka.

A Measured Step Into the Scotch Whisky World
While still in its early stages, Radico Khaitan’s move into Scotland represents a notable moment for the Indian spirits industry. By laying the groundwork for Scotch whisky production and maturation, the company is positioning itself for long-term value creation rather than short-term gains.
If executed carefully, the strategy could see Radico evolve from a major importer and blender of malt spirits into a fully integrated global whisky producer with assets at the very heart of Scotch whisky country.
What This Means for Whisky Investors
Radico Khaitan’s move into Scotland is more than a corporate expansion — it’s another clear signal of the growing global demand for premium whisky and long-term maturation assets. As international producers invest directly in distillation, warehousing and aged inventory, the value of well-managed whisky casks continues to strengthen.
