Famed actor Willem Dafoe is teaming up with Laphroaig to create a brand-new Scotch whisky, set for release in 2026. Known for his daring and unconventional career choices, Dafoe is an inspired partner for the Islay distillery that has spent more than 200 years crafting one of Scotland’s most distinctive and divisive single malts.

Shaping the Next Expression with Sarah Dowling

Working closely with senior blender Sarah Dowling, Dafoe took part in blind tastings to help shape the new whisky. His spontaneous impressions during these sessions became the blueprint for the upcoming expression. “I tried to express what I was feeling and sensing,” Dafoe recalls. “They designed something specifically, and I tasted it. I said, ‘Yeah, that’s it.’”

The “Unphorgettable” Campaign

Laphroaig’s latest campaign, “Unphorgettable,” celebrates characters as distinctive as the whisky itself. For Kirsteen Beeston, senior global marketing director at Suntory Global Spirits, Dafoe was the obvious choice:

“Willem Dafoe personifies Laphroaig — he’s a truly unforgettable character, inimitable, and impossible to define, much like our whisky.”

The Taste: A Short Film Collaboration

The first fruit of this partnership is The Taste, a short film directed by Tim Pope, best known for iconic music videos for The Cure and David Bowie. In it, Dafoe grapples with putting Laphroaig’s smoky, maritime character into words, eventually landing on the vivid description:

“Like kissing a mermaid in a rocky rowboat on a lively sea.”

The film also highlights the creativity of Friends of Laphroaig, the brand’s community of enthusiasts, whose colourful tasting notes have become part of the distillery’s identity.

A Personal Connection That Runs Deep

Dafoe’s relationship with Laphroaig stretches back nearly 50 years. “When I was first in New York City,” he recalls, “I had a friend who turned me onto Laphroaig many years ago — that’s 1976 or so. So that’s probably the start, and it meant something to me.”

Cinema and Scotch: A Shared Legacy

The link between Laphroaig and cinema runs deeper than this collaboration. In the 1950s, distillery manager Bessie Williamson would transform the malting floor into a makeshift movie theatre, bringing Hollywood magic to Islay’s residents. Now, decades later, Dafoe’s work with the brand continues this cinematic connection.

A Whisky Born from Experimentation

Laphroaig’s reputation for experimentation continues to shine. While whisky fans await the Dafoe release, they can explore Elements 3.0, the latest in the distillery’s Elements series. Born from an unexpected kiln fire, this limited-edition dram carries distinctive notes of chocolate and coffee — a happy accident that reflects the distillery’s inventive spirit.

Looking Ahead

Though Dafoe has yet to visit Islay, he proudly holds his own square foot of land as a Friend of Laphroaig — a quirky tradition shared by thousands of fans worldwide. He hopes to see it soon:

“It’s kind of a beautifully wacky idea. I have a little certificate. It would be fun to have a little reunion and go back there.”

With a career built on bold choices and a distillery famed for uncompromising individuality, the Dafoe-Laphroaig collaboration feels inevitable — and unforgettable. Whisky enthusiasts will be eager to taste the results when the new expression arrives in 2026.

Invest in Whiskies as Unforgettable as Laphroaig

Rare and limited releases like these often capture the imagination of both enthusiasts and investors, becoming highly sought-after assets in the years to come.
