Distilled in February 1973, this particular single malt has undergone a meticulous 50-year maturation process, showcasing the dedication and precision that define Tomintoul’s craftsmanship.
Crafting a Whisky Masterpiece
The ageing process of Tomintoul Vintage 1973 is a testament to the artistry of whisky production.
Initial maturation occurred over 33 years in American oak ex-bourbon barrels within Tomintoul’s Cairngorms warehouse. Master Distiller Robert Fleming then took charge, selecting a single Oloroso Sherry hogshead cask for an additional 17 years of maturation. Bottled in April 2023, the whisky reached the significant milestone of 50 years.
Nestled in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park, Tomintoul Distillery embodies the essence of Speyside’s distilling heritage. It first opened its doors in 1965, harnessing the fresh pure water of Ballanturan Spring, Tomintoul produces exceptionally smooth and well-balanced whisky.
As a fourth-generation Speyside distiller, Robert Fleming carries forward a legacy of handcrafted whisky, employing traditional techniques that span centuries and contribute to the distinct flavour profile of Tomintoul whiskies.
Master Distiller’s Perspective
Robert Fleming shares insights into the production ethos, stating, “At Tomintoul, we’re one of just a few single malt Scotch whiskies still lovingly produced by hand. Using traditional techniques that stretch back hundreds of years, we take great pride in our whisky and appreciate the flavour and complexity that develops from time spent in the cask.”
