TIME: SPACE – A Dual Chamber Masterpiece

The first release, TIME: SPACE, features a striking dual-chamber vessel housing two distinct whiskies, each representing a pivotal moment in The Macallan’s history. In one chamber lies the oldest whisky ever released by the distillery – an 84-year-old single malt, while the other contains the first whisky from The Macallan’s new distillery, launched in 2018. Together, these whiskies symbolically merge the brand’s storied past and its promising future.

The 84-year-old vintage (the oldest whisky release in the world), distilled in 1940, is an extraordinary single malt drawn from two hand-selected casks – a first-fill American Oak Butt and a second-fill European Oak Butt, both seasoned with sherry in Jerez de la Frontera. After spending eight decades maturing in Speyside, Scotland, this whisky is bottled at 43.6% ABV. Its deep natural colour, rich complexity, and long-lasting flavour embody the culmination of nearly a century of whisky-making expertise.

In contrast, the 2018 vintage housed in the central chamber marks the dawn of a new era for The Macallan. This single malt, the first from the new distillery, represents the brand’s commitment to excellence and innovation, even as it maintains continuity with its timeless traditions.

The vessel itself is a marvel, designed to highlight the 100% natural colour of the whiskies and encased in a sculpture crafted from alternating layers of American and European oak. This design pays tribute to The Macallan’s enduring dedication to using sherry-seasoned oak casks – a key element in the brand’s flavour profile.

Kirsteen Campbell Reflects on Whisky Mastery

Kirsteen Campbell, The Macallan’s Master Whisky Maker, spoke about the honour of selecting whisky from the 1940s to commemorate the brand’s 200-year journey. “As a Whisky Mastery Team, we get to time travel – choosing whisky crafted by our predecessors while also laying down casks for future generations,” Campbell remarked. “Nosing, tasting, and selecting whisky created over eight decades ago is an exceptionally rare occasion that I will treasure forever.”

She also emphasised the excitement surrounding the 2018 vintage. “Selecting a younger cask gives us a glimpse into The Macallan’s future. The launch of our new distillery in 2018 was a significant moment, and this whisky embodies the evolution of our craft.”

TIME: SPACE Mastery – Celebrating 200 Years of Excellence

The second release, TIME: SPACE Mastery, offers a unique single malt that encapsulates 200 years of The Macallan’s whisky-making expertise. This one-of-a-kind creation is crafted from 14 exceptional cask types, resulting in layers of complexity, depth, and aroma that pay homage to the brand’s rich history.

Euan Kennedy, Lead Whisky Maker for TIME: SPACE Mastery, described the process of selecting whisky from across The Macallan’s vast inventory, with influences from European Oak sherry-seasoned casks, American Oak sherry casks, and American Oak Bourbon casks. Together, these casks create a whisky with extraordinary richness in aroma, flavour, and texture. “We’ve captured the influences of cask seasoning, oak origin, and distillery character to create something truly special,” Kennedy said.

The whisky is housed in a circular vessel representing the circle of life and the seamless journey from past to future. The presentation case bursts with vibrant red, a nod to The Macallan’s iconic colour, and features 200 spikes symbolising the brand’s bicentennial. These intricate details, inspired by the art of origami, reflect The Macallan’s philosophy of protecting its most precious asset – its incomparable whisky.

Both TIME: SPACE and TIME: SPACE Mastery will be available through exclusive invitations and The Macallan Society Ballot, offering collectors a chance to own a piece of whisky history.
