The Glenrothes Unveils “The 51”: A Groundbreaking Whisky Release
The Glenrothes, a renowned Speyside whisky producer, has unveiled its oldest-ever release: The 51. This exclusive whisky marks a significant milestone in the distillery’s history, which dates back to 1879. Aged for 51 years, this limited-edition whisky is a blend of two exceptional casks, offering collectors and connoisseurs a truly unique experience.
The Rarity and Price of The 51
With only 100 bottles available worldwide, The 51 is one of the rarest whiskies ever produced by The Glenrothes. Priced at £37,000 ($46,500) per bottle, this exquisite whisky is a luxury investment for serious collectors and whisky enthusiasts alike.
A Whisky Hidden in Plain Sight
In an unprecedented move, buyers of The 51 will not be able to see the bottle before purchase. Instead, each bottle is encased in a solid, sustainably sourced Jesmonite column. This makes The 51 the first whisky in the world that can only be accessed by breaking its packaging.
To retrieve the bottle, buyers will need to use a hammer, which is provided with the purchase, to smash the Jesmonite casing. This dramatic unveiling adds an element of ritual to the whisky experience, making it even more memorable.
Kintsugi: Turning Destruction into Art
Once the whisky has been retrieved, buyers have the option to send the shattered remains of the Jesmonite column to a kintsugi artist. Kintsugi, meaning ‘golden repair’ in Japanese, is the ancient art of mending broken pottery with urushi lacquer mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum.
This bespoke repair service, included in the purchase price, ensures that each buyer receives a unique and lasting piece of art. Wendy Espie, Global NPD Manager at The Glenrothes, explained that Jesmonite was chosen for its ability to break cleanly, ensuring each experience is distinct.
The Craftsmanship Behind the Whisky
The whisky itself has been meticulously crafted by Laura Rampling, The Glenrothes’ Master Whisky Maker. The 51 is a blend of two specially selected casks: one remnant cask from a previous vatting, providing depth and richness, and a single cask offering balance and lightness.
‘The 51 is a testament to those rare moments in whisky making when patience, nature, and craft align perfectly,’ said Rampling. ‘This whisky defies expectations—elegant yet powerful, it offers a singular experience for those who truly understand and appreciate rarity.’
Tasting Notes: A Symphony of Flavours
Showing all the hallmarks of The Glenrothes’ signature softness, The 51 delivers a multi-layered tasting experience:
- Aroma: Florist shop fragrances interwoven with notes of tonka bean, figs, nuts, sandalwood, and bergamot.
- Palate: Surprisingly vibrant for a whisky of this age, unveiling layers of tropical fruit, floral notes, blanched almonds, macadamia, lemon citrus, and vanilla oak.
- Finish: Exceptionally smooth, fresh, and lingering, offering an elegant and refined conclusion.
A New Perspective on Collecting Whisky
Jonny Fowle, Global Head of Whisky at Sotheby’s, commented on The 51, highlighting its innovative approach to whisky collecting. “In recent years, the market has overwhelmed collectors with ultra-premium whiskies at high price points, making them hesitant to open their bottles. The 51 presents a fresh solution—it is for true whisky lovers who interact, drink, and enjoy Scotch.”
Where to Find The 51
The 51 will be available through select whisky specialists, including Sotheby’s, boutique whisky retailers, and luxury department stores such as Harrods.
For those seeking an unparalleled whisky experience—both in taste and presentation—The Glenrothes The 51 offers a rare opportunity to own, experience, and appreciate a true masterpiece of whisky craftsmanship.
