A New Era for The Cabrach: Whisky Production Returns to Speyside After 170 Years

The craft of whisky production has returned to the historic Cabrach community in Speyside after more than 170 years of silence. Located on the northern edge of Scotland’s Cairngorms National Park, The Cabrach once flourished as a hub for illicit whisky distillation.

Now, The Cabrach Distillery is bringing legal production back to this remote area, signalling a revival of traditional methods and a new chapter in the region’s history

Reviving a Lost Legacy

The Cabrach Distillery marks a pivotal achievement for The Cabrach Trust, an organisation dedicated to preserving the cultural heritage of The Cabrach. Established in 2013, The Cabrach Trust aims to rejuvenate this rural community, which has faced years of economic hardship and population decline. The distillery is the flagship asset of the Trust’s regeneration plan, envisioned not only as a whisky producer but also as a catalyst for community revival and a point of attraction for tourism.

In addition to the distillery, the Trust’s plans include developing a heritage centre and a bistro, adding depth to the visitor experience and ensuring that Cabrach’s story is preserved for future generations.

The Inaugural Distillation Ceremony: Honouring Cabrach’s Heritage

The historic first distillation at The Cabrach Distillery took place within restored 19th-century stone steadings at Inverharroch Farm, and over 100 guests gathered for the occasion. This included community members and members of The Cabrach Collective, a group of dedicated “founding champions” working to rekindle the lost art of whisky-making in the region.

The ceremony also featured the Scottish Deputy First Minister, Kate Forbes, who emphasised the distillery’s role in community-led regeneration and economic growth. As one of the first projects to receive funding from the Scottish Government’s Just Transition Fund, The Cabrach Distillery aligns with national goals to create jobs and foster sustainable development in the North East and Moray regions.

Community and Government Support Fueling Regeneration

Ms Forbes shared her enthusiasm for the project, describing it as a “unique part of the vibrant food and drink sector” in Scotland. As a social enterprise and distillery, The Cabrach Distillery exemplifies how the traditional craft can contribute to both national and local economies. “Today’s ceremony signals the start of a new chapter for The Cabrach and its ambitions to be a leading example of community-led, rural regeneration,” she remarked, underscoring the government’s commitment to sustainable, rural development.

Jonathan Christie, Chief Executive Officer of The Cabrach Trust, also spoke on the occasion. “Our first distillation represents a long-awaited, landmark milestone in our journey to revive the lost spirit of The Cabrach,” he said, adding that the project will serve as the “economic lungs” of the community’s regeneration plan. Christie anticipates that thousands of visitors will be drawn to the distillery by The Cabrach’s history and landscapes, sparking a renewed interest in the region.

A Vision Rooted in Tradition and Community

Grant Gordon OBE, Founder and Chair of The Cabrach Trust, shared his personal connection to the area, having witnessed The Cabrach’s struggles over his lifetime. Since establishing the Trust, Gordon has seen the community grow closer, united by the shared goal of preserving Cabrach’s unique heritage. “The creation of The Cabrach Distillery sits at the heart of our regeneration aims for The Cabrach. This is a unique community asset that will celebrate an important part of The Cabrach’s cultural identity,” he reflected, envisioning the distillery as a tribute to the area’s rich heritage.

Crafting Cabrach Whisky: Tradition Meets Sustainability

Wholly owned by The Cabrach Trust, the distillery will produce 100,000 litres of spirit annually. Barley will be sourced from fields adjacent to the distillery and surrounding farms, further embedding sustainability and community integration into the production process. The distillery uses small Forsyths stills cooled by traditional worm tubs, and the majority of its casks will mature on-site, imbuing the whisky with the authentic character of The Cabrach’s natural environment.

The first bottles of Cabrach Single Malt Scotch Whisky, expected to be released in 2030, will embody the history, resilience, and passion of this small community. Hand-crafted and born of tradition, this whisky is poised to capture the spirit of The Cabrach and introduce it to a global audience.

Looking Ahead: The Cabrach’s Bright Future

The return of whisky production to The Cabrach is a revival of a lost tradition, a source of local pride, and a symbol of hope for the community’s future. Through the distillery, heritage centre, and bistro, The Cabrach Trust is actively creating opportunities for generations to come.

As 2030 approaches, whisky enthusiasts and history lovers alike will eagerly await the release of the first Cabrach Single Malt Scotch Whisky, a testament to the enduring spirit of a region that has reclaimed its place in Scotland’s whisky-making heritage.
