The Balvenie Fifty Collection: A New Era in Whisky
The Balvenie, a name with a long storied history in whisky, has embarked on a bold journey with the launch of its latest single malt collection, The Balvenie Fifty. This exclusive collection marks a significant milestone, not only for the brand but also for its new malt master, Kelsey McKechnie.
The inaugural release, an exceptionally rare 50-Year-Old whisky, sets the stage for what promises to be a series of remarkable creations.
A New Master at the Helm
In early 2024, Kelsey McKechnie stepped into the role of malt master at The Balvenie, succeeding the legendary David Stewart, who served the distillery for over six decades.
Stewart’s tenure left an indelible mark on the whisky industry, and McKechnie’s transition into this role is a testament to her skill and dedication. Having worked closely with Stewart for several years, McKechnie’s influence on The Balvenie Fifty Collection is profound, making this series a landmark project in her whisky career.

The Balvenie Fifty Collection
The Balvenie Fifty Collection is set to include three unique expressions, each promising a sensory journey through decades of craftsmanship. Collectors and enthusiasts alike should prepare for a significant investment, as the complete set is expected to cost around $150,000.
The first edition is a single-cask whisky drawn from a European oak refill butt filled in 1973. This whisky will also feature in subsequent releases, where it will be joined by spirits matured in American oak casks, creating new layers of flavour complexity.
A Limited and Luxurious Offering
The first release of The Balvenie Fifty is limited to just 125 bottles, adding to its exclusivity. A portion of these bottles will be available exclusively at Harrods in London until September 12, 2024, with a global rollout scheduled for early autumn. It will be available with a price tag of £42,500 (approximately $54,000)
The launch event, held at Harrods’ rooftop restaurant Studio Frantzén, provided a rare opportunity for a select group of journalists to sample this extraordinary whisky.
The Housing
The Balvenie Fifty’s first edition is as much a visual masterpiece as it is a sensory one. The whisky is housed in a crystal decanter, which is encased in a beautifully crafted wooden sleeve. This sleeve, designed by a bespoke craft workshop in Cumbria, England, is a work of art in itself, featuring over 100 different elements, including a helix structure made from layers of wood and a 14-carat gold-plated brass coin. This attention to detail makes The Balvenie Fifty not just a drink, but a collector’s item that will stand out in any display.
Tasting Notes
- Colour: The whisky glows with a shimmering bronze hue, perfectly complementing its natural wood display case.
- Nose: The aroma is an inviting blend of dried and candied fruits, with subtle hints of poached pears and toasted nuts. Initially, it feels like a winter dram with its heavy notes, but a surprising vibrancy and lightness belies its age.
- Palate: On the palate, the whisky is unmistakably a Speyside creation. The fifty years in sherry oak have imparted a delicate balance, with more candied fruits, honey, and vanilla taking centre stage. Floral notes linger in the background, while a tingling spice of candied ginger and citrus fruits adds a refreshing yet powerful dimension.
- Finish: The finish is where the whisky’s age truly shines. There’s a cedarwood spice and a warming dryness, with a slightly tannic quality that balances the lingering sweetness of candied fruits.
