Scotch Whisky Gains Historic Legal Protection in Argentina
In a major milestone for one of the UK’s most iconic exports, Scotch Whisky has become the first international product to receive Geographical Indication (GI) status in Argentina. This prestigious designation offers legal protection that ensures only genuine Scotch Whisky can be sold under its name in the country.
What Does Geographical Indication Status Mean?
Geographical Indication (GI) is more than just a legal label—it’s a guarantee of authenticity. For Scotch Whisky, it recognises:
- Centuries of craftsmanship
- Traditional and distinctive production methods
- The unique Scottish heritage that gives the spirit its unmistakable character
By securing GI status, Argentina has acknowledged that Scotch Whisky’s identity cannot be replicated anywhere else in the world.
Fighting Fakes, Supporting Growth
This move is also a powerful tool in combating counterfeit spirits. With GI protection in place, consumers in Argentina can now trust that when they buy a bottle labelled as Scotch Whisky, they’re getting the real deal.
For producers, it opens the door to a market with reduced risk of imitation products undermining brand integrity. It’s a win-win: greater consumer confidence and stronger international business potential for distillers.

A First for Argentina and a Boost for British Trade
Scotch Whisky isn’t just a success story in the UK—it’s a global ambassador for British quality. The fact that it’s the first foreign product to receive GI protection in Argentina signals growing international demand for authentic British goods.
In 2024, UK food and drink exports reached record highs, with GI-designated products making up around 25% of all exports, contributing over £6 billion annually.
Comments on the GI Status of Whisky in Argentina
The recognition has drawn praise from UK ministers and industry experts, who view it as another major step in expanding Britain’s trade footprint.
Daniel Zeichner, Minister for Food Security and Rural Affairs, commented:
“Argentina’s legal protection of Scotch Whisky marks another triumph for this world-class British export. In just six months, we’ve secured a breakthrough trade agreement with India and legal protections for dozens of British products across the globe—from São Paulo to Tokyo.”
Trade Minister Douglas Alexander highlighted the strategic importance of this recognition:
“Scotch Whisky is the first foreign product to receive special protection in Argentina—testament to both the strength of our trade ties and the global prestige of Scotland’s world-renowned product.”
He also noted how this move builds on recent gains, including a landmark trade agreement with India that slashes whisky tariffs by 50%—a significant commercial boost for Scottish distillers.
Scottish Secretary Ian Murray echoed the celebration:
“There is no substitute for authentic Scotch Whisky. It’s fantastic that the UK Government and the Scotch Whisky Association’s collaborative efforts have convinced Argentina to give our national drink the protection it deserves.”
He emphasised the role of initiatives like Brand Scotland and the wider UK Government’s Plan for Change in opening up and expanding markets worldwide.
A spokesperson from the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) remarked:
“The legal protection in place for Scotch whisky in Argentina is a product of many years’ work by the SWA and our counterparts in the market.”
The announcement follows closely on the heels of the UK securing GI protection for 39 British specialities in Japan, and the free trade agreement with India—both contributing to a banner year for Scotch on the international stage.

A Bright Future for Scotch Exports
This GI status is more than symbolic—it’s a powerful commercial and cultural win that enhances Scotch Whisky’s global stature. It underscores the UK’s strategic approach to trade, where protecting heritage products like Scotch Whisky opens new doors, secures economic growth, and strengthens Britain’s position in global markets.
With Argentina now part of the growing list of countries recognising Scotch’s unique identity, one thing is clear: the world is raising a glass to Scotland’s finest.
