Closure and Restoration

After three decades of silence since its closure in 1993, Rosebank Distillery is set to reclaim its throne as the ‘King of the Lowlands’.

The distillery was well known in the local community during the 20th Century, but the triple-distilled whisky was used in blends by its parent company. By 1982, Rosebank decided to produce its own single malt, however, it was not enough to save the distillery which shut its doors in 1993.

Then, in 2015, Ian Macleod Distillers showed interest in purchasing the distillery. After two years of work, it was announced in 2017 that Rosebank had been rescued.

Following an extensive four-year restoration project, the historic distillery has emerged from the ashes, restoring its landmark 108ft chimney stack that once dominated Falkirk’s skyline.

The new distillery has elements of the old mixed with the new as Rosebank releases aged whisky from the production pre-closure and new whisky once it has matured.

Preserving History

Retaining its original mill, which boasts a remarkable 103-year-old legacy, the distillery now stands as a living testament to its bygone era. The mill continues to play a vital role in the production of Rosebank’s whisky, just as it did over thirty years ago.

Restoration Efforts

Every aspect of the restoration process has been executed with meticulous care and attention to detail. From repairing the chimney stack to faithfully replicating the original stills, the restoration team has spared no effort in ensuring the distillery’s revival stays true to its rich heritage.

Reimagining Tradition

The distillery’s interior has been ingeniously redesigned to welcome whisky enthusiasts from around the world. With six tastefully appointed tasting rooms, visitors are invited to savour the nuanced flavours of Rosebank whisky in an immersive setting.

A Warehouse of Treasures

A new dunnage-style warehouse, constructed from the bricks of its historic counterpart, now serves as a shrine to Rosebank’s legacy. Here, precious casks from the original distillery stand proudly alongside the first casks of the revived Rosebank spirit, offering a glimpse into the past and future of this esteemed whisky.

The Visionary Behind the Revival

Leonard Russell, managing director of Ian Macleod Distillers, spearheaded the ambitious project to resurrect Rosebank Distillery. His determination to preserve the distillery’s legacy underscores the significance of its reopening, especially for the town of Falkirk:

“I could see that Rosebank Distillery was held in extremely high regard and it was a huge shame that it closed when it was distilling some of the best spirit for the Scotch whisky industry.”

“Being small, Rosebank was one of the more expensive whiskies to produce, but in my view that’s no reason to close a distillery. Its reopening will be a very special moment for its hometown of Falkirk, for the Scotch industry and for whisky lovers everywhere.”

Open for Visitors on June 7th 2024

As the grand reopening date of June 7th approaches, anticipation builds among whisky aficionados worldwide. The return of Rosebank Distillery symbolises more than just the revival of a renowned name; it signifies the enduring spirit of craftsmanship and tradition that defines Scotland’s whisky heritage.
