One of One Whisky Charity Auction Breaks 19 Auction Records
On the 5th of October 2023, whisky enthusiasts and collectors from around the world came together for a remarkable event.
The One of One whisky charity auction was organised by The Worshipful Company of Distillers. With 39 lots of ultra-rare whiskies up for sale, the event exceeded all expectations, setting new records and raising an astounding total of nearly £2.25 million.
This substantial sum will primarily benefit The Distillers’ Charity’s Youth Action Fund, a noble cause aimed at transforming the lives of young people in Scotland.
A Night of Auction Records
The One of One whisky charity auction was not just an ordinary event; it was a night where auction records tumbled like falling dominoes.
A total of nineteen auction records were achieved across various lots, showcasing the extraordinary demand for these exceptional whiskies.
Some examples of a record-breaking event include:
- Brora’s Brilliance (Lot 5): The Brora Iris 50-Year Old 1972, the oldest Brora single malt ever bottled and presented in a 1.5-litre decanter, set a new record by selling for an astonishing £400,000.
- Bowmore’s Triumph (Lot 22): The star of the night was the Bowmore STAC 55 Years Old, the oldest whisky ever released by the distillery. It fetched a staggering £562,500, leading to an intense bidding battle among collectors who eagerly sought this highly prized single malt.
- Glen Grant’s Legacy (Lot 32): The Visionary, one of the oldest whiskies to be released by the Glen Grant Distillery, more than doubled its high estimate, selling for £212,500 and establishing a new record for a bottle of The Glen Grant at auction.
- The Glenturret’s Endurance (Lot 13): The Glenturret Enduring Spirit, featuring four Lalique crystal decanters, each containing liquid to celebrate a century of The Glenturret’s existence, tripled its estimate to bring in £125,000—a remarkable achievement for this historic distillery.
- Gordon & MacPhail’s Showcase (Lot 34): The Gordon & MacPhail Recollection Showcase, featuring five uniquely engraved Glencairn decanters, each containing an extremely rare one-off 70cl single malt from a distillery that has been lost or silent for decades, brought in £93,750.
- Old Pulteney’s Elegance (Lot 11): Old Pulteney Bow Wave 45 Year Old, the oldest expression ever released from Old Pulteney Distillery, more than doubled its pre-sale high estimate, selling for £68,750.
- Scotch Malt Whisky Society’s Gem (Lot 33): From the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, The Only Drop saw a flurry of bids resulting in a final sale price of £18,750.
The Distillers’ Charity Youth Action Fund
Beyond the thrill of setting auction records, the One of One whisky charity event had a deeper purpose.
A proportion of the proceeds from the hammer, up to £1.8 million, will primarily benefit The Distillers’ Charity’s Youth Action Fund. This fund is dedicated to transforming the lives of young people in Scotland by helping them develop knowledge, confidence, resilience, and skills, ensuring a brighter future for generations to come.
