Plans for a New Whisky Distillery in Perthshire: A Boost for Spittal of Glenshee
Plans are underway to establish a new whisky distillery south of Spittal of Glenshee in Perthshire, a project that promises to breathe fresh life into the region while embracing sustainability and community benefits.
Transforming Finegand Farm into a Whisky Haven
The proposed distillery will involve the renovation and extension of existing farm buildings at Finegand Farm, with Rhiedorrach Estates leading the charge. The estate has applied to Perth and Kinross Council for a change of use to accommodate a craft distillery, visitor centre, and maturation warehouse.
Perth and Kinross Council recently provided Rhiedorrach Estates with a scoping opinion, outlining the environmental impact information required under planning legislation. The ambitious plans, still in the early stages, aim to balance local heritage with modern business opportunities.
A Vision for Sustainability and Community Development
Alex Mackenzie Smith, a consultant for Rhiedorrach Estates LLP, emphasised the potential benefits of the project earlier this year. “Currently, the buildings at Finegand are barely utilised and are in need of renovation,” Smith noted.
He explained that the idea for a high-quality, sustainable whisky distillery emerged from research into how redeveloping the site could support the local community and the estate.
Local Benefits and Tourism Opportunities
The proposed distillery is expected to create long-term employment opportunities, support local suppliers, and become a tourist attraction. Its location beside the A93 positions it as a potential hub for economic activity in the Glenshee area.
Smith expressed hope that the distillery would benefit the entire glen community, stating:
“The aim is to create a sustainable business providing local employment and economic benefits. This distillery will also offer a café, visitor centre, and shop, all tastefully designed to complement the local landscape.”
Leadership and Commitment to Revitalise the Glen
Finegand Distillery is owned by Wayne and Heather Johnson, who acquired the site last year. The Johnsons are committed to reinvigorating the glen and see the distillery as more than a business. They envision it as a cultural and economic asset for the region, blending tradition with modern craftsmanship.
Discussions are ongoing to attract major investment, and the estate has pledged to keep the community informed at every stage of development. Opportunities for local consultation will ensure the project aligns with the interests of the area.
Next Steps in the Planning Process
While the plans are still at a preliminary stage, they have sparked interest and excitement within the community. The Cairngorms National Park Authority planners are also involved in the pre-application process.
Perth and Kinross Council confirmed that the project is in its infancy, with further environmental and planning assessments required.
A New Distillery for Glenshee?
If successful, the Finegand Distillery project will not only rejuvenate unused farm buildings but also establish Perthshire as a key destination for whisky tourism. With its focus on sustainability, local collaboration, and high-quality whisky production, this venture has the potential to become a landmark attraction in the Scottish Highlands.
It has become a focus for many areas of Scotland to take advantage of the prestigious reputation of whisky to draw tourists and produce a high-quality product. In recent years we have seen:
- North Uist Distillery starting production
- Gin Bothy opening a distillery in Glen Prosen
- Witchburn Distillery planning to open near Campbeltown
