Lochlea Distillery Celebrates Sixth Anniversary With Limited Edition Whisky
Ayrshire-based Lochlea Distillery has marked its sixth anniversary with the release of a highly anticipated limited edition whisky. This milestone launch showcases the distillery’s dedication to craftsmanship and innovation, offering whisky enthusiasts a taste of its evolving journey.
Lochlea 6-Year-Old Whisky
Named Lochlea-6, this six-year-old whisky is a harmonious blend of six carefully selected casks. 3 first-fill Bourbon Barrels (132, 135 and 138) and 3 Oloroso Sherry Butts (250, 251 and 252). This release follows last year’s celebrated five-year-old age-statement whisky, which sold out within a day.
As with the previous release, the Lochlea 6-Year-Old features liquid distilled in 2018, during the distillery’s inaugural year. This heritage connection adds depth and meaning to each bottle, making it a true collector’s item.
Crafted by New Leadership
This year’s expression is the first under the guidance of Jill Boyd, Lochlea’s newly appointed master blender, and distillery manager Darren McCormick. Their collaboration comes in the wake of former production leader John Campbell’s departure last year. Boyd and McCormick’s expertise and passion shine in this carefully curated whisky.
The Six Casks Behind Lochlea-6
The 6-Year-Old whisky is crafted from an equal mix of three Bourbon barrels and three oloroso Sherry casks. This combination offers a balanced and complex profile, blending the best of these two distinct cask styles.
Master blender Jill Boyd shared her insights into the whisky:
“It’s been such a pleasure to start my time at Lochlea with the creation of our six-year-old single malt. Three oloroso casks provide a rich depth, with flavors of juicy, ripe berries, sticky dates, and candied ginger. Complementing this, three Bourbon barrels add a touch of sweetness, with delicate vanilla and light caramel lending a brightness that allows the fruit and sweetness from all six casks to truly shine. The finish is rich and lingering, with silky tannins and warm oak spices rounding out the whisky.”
A Timely Release for Burns Night
The Lochlea 6-Year-Old will officially launch on 24 January 2025, just in time for Burns Night on 25 January. This celebration of Scottish poet Robert Burns holds special significance for Lochlea, as the distillery is located on Lochlea Farm, where Burns lived and worked between 1777 and 1784.
Limited Availability
With only 2,500 bottles available worldwide, this limited edition whisky is expected to be highly sought after. Priced at £90 (US$110), the Lochlea 6-Year-Old offers exceptional value for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
