Bringing Whisky Back to the Isle of Tiree: A 200-Year Revival by Two Folk Musicians
The Isle of Tiree, the westernmost gem in Scotland’s Inner Hebrides, has a rich, albeit illicit, history of whisky distilling. Once home to nearly 50 secret whisky operations, the island’s production dried up in the 1800s. Now, two folk musicians have reignited this long-dormant craft, reviving Tiree’s whisky-making legacy after more than two centuries.
A Dream Realised: The Founding of Isle of Tiree Distillery
In 2012, Alain Campbell and Ian Smith, traditional folk musicians and Tiree natives founded the Isle of Tiree Distillery. Their vision? To reintroduce whisky production to their beloved island, not only preserving its history but also creating a legacy for future generations.
This January, that dream became a reality with the release of the distillery’s first single malt whisky—the first legal whisky crafted on Tiree in over 200 years.
The First Whisky Release: Limited and Highly Coveted
The distillery’s inaugural release is as exclusive as it is historic. With only 800 bottles produced, this limited-edition single malt comes with a price tag of £199.99. During an initial pre-sale last year, 400 bottles sold out in less than two hours, highlighting the high demand and excitement surrounding this landmark moment.
For collectors and enthusiasts, the first 10 bottles will be auctioned starting January 31. As part of their commitment to the island community, Campbell and Smith have pledged 10% of the auction profits to local charities, ensuring the island benefits from the success of its revived whisky trade.
The Art of Craft Distilling on Tiree
Campbell and Smith’s approach to whisky production is steeped in tradition. With an output of just 2,000 litres of pure alcohol per year, the distillery maintains an artisanal, small-batch ethos.
“Our methods reflect how whisky might historically have been made on the island,” Campbell explained. This meticulous process includes:
- Hand-mashing laureate malted barley in mesh mash bags, which are hoisted on wooden blocks to clear the wort into an oak mash tun.
- Extra-long fermentation in oak washbacks, adding depth and complexity to the whisky.
- Two-stage distillation in wide copper wash stills and a 300-litre spirit still, carefully shaping the spirit.
- Ageing in small casks on Tiree’s rugged coastline, where the maritime climate lends a unique character to the whisky.
A Legacy Reborn
Alain Campbell captured the spirit of this revival when he said, “We created our distillery to bring whisky production back to the island, and this will be the first single malt whisky from Tiree in over 200 years.”
By blending their love of music, heritage, and craftsmanship, the founders of Isle of Tiree Distillery have achieved more than just producing fine whisky—they’ve rekindled a lost tradition and brought a piece of history back to life.
With this milestone, the Isle of Tiree Distillery is not only putting Tiree back on Scotland’s whisky map but also ensuring that the island’s legacy continues to flourish for generations to come.
