Guala Closures Unveils €60M Production Facility in Gartcosh, Scotland

Guala Closures, a global leader in premium and innovative closure solutions, has officially opened its cutting-edge production facility in Gartcosh, Scotland. Representing an investment of over €60 million (£52 million), the new site marks one of the largest investments by an Italian business in the UK.

A Strategic Expansion to Support Over 100 Distilleries

Headquartered in Italy, Guala Closures already partners with more than 100 distilleries worldwide. The new facility spans 20,000 square metres and is expected to create over 300 skilled jobs, further embedding the company into the heart of the Scotch whisky industry.

Innovation at the Core: Next-Gen Manufacturing Technologies

The Gartcosh plant integrates state-of-the-art technologies, including the pioneering Electro Magnetic Forming (EMF) process—developed and patented exclusively by Guala Closures. Alongside EMF, robotic systems and flexible automation deliver high-precision, tamper-evident closures. These innovations help clients achieve strong brand differentiation, product safety, and operational efficiency in bottling.

A Model of Sustainable Manufacturing

Sustainability was central to the facility’s design and construction. Key environmental features include:

  • 2.4 MW of rooftop solar panels
  • Advanced insulation and airtight construction
  • Energy-efficient LED lighting with motion sensors
  • Sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS) and attenuation tanks
  • Optimised plant layout to reduce material movement and forklift traffic

This commitment to sustainable practices aligns with both Guala Closures’ ESG goals and the broader demands of environmentally conscious consumers and brands.

A Hub for Innovation: On-Site R&D Centre

Beyond manufacturing, the Gartcosh site houses a specialised R&D centre dedicated to high-end closures. The UK-based team focuses on recycled and speciality polymers and works closely with premium spirits brands on bespoke product development. This local innovation capability is instrumental in maintaining client competitiveness in a market driven by design, quality, and sustainability.

Backed by Strategic Investment

Guala Closures was acquired in 2021 by an investment subsidiary of Investindustrial VII L.P., a major European private equity firm. Investindustrial’s portfolio includes well-known UK and international brands such as Morgan Motor Company, Mountain Warehouse, Ducati, and Zegna.

The Gartcosh development was supported by a €3.5 million grant from Scottish Enterprise, which also facilitated the site’s acquisition through the Gartcosh Business Interchange.

A Celebratory Opening with Dignitaries and Industry Leaders

The opening ceremony was held on July 21 and welcomed a distinguished group of guests, including:

  • Ivan McKee, Scottish Minister for Public Finance
  • Veronica Ferrucci, Consul General of Italy in Edinburgh
  • Umberto Bernardo, Head of the Economic Office at the Italian Embassy in the UK
  • Adrian Gillespie, CEO of Scottish Enterprise

They were joined by Guala Closures Chairman Gabriele Del Torchio and CEO Andrea Lodetti, along with customers, partners, and local stakeholders.

Speaking at the ceremony, CEO Andrea Lodetti said:

“The opening of our Gartcosh facility is more than just an inauguration – it’s a bold statement of our vision for the future.

With this investment, we are strengthening our roots in a region that is globally iconic, reinforcing our commitment to the Scotch whisky industry, and setting a new benchmark in sustainable, high-performance packaging.”

Scottish Public Finance Minister Ivan McKee added:

“Guala Closures’ new €60 million plus investment shows real confidence in Scotland as a place for business and innovation… This site alone supports more than 300 high quality jobs and is at the centre of the wider regeneration of the Gartcosh area.”
