How has Glenfiddich raised £150k for Ukraine?
Brian Kinsman, a Malt master from Glenfiddich created this year’s Special Spirit of Speyside Edition 2022 to support Ukraine. 460 of these bottles were signed and auctioned off on the Whisky Auctioneer.
Ukraine appeal
Efforts were made to make sure as much money could be raised for Ukraine. For example, Whisky Auctioneer decided to waive its selling fees and is even donating the 10% buyer’s commission. The proceeds will go directly to Disasters Emergency Committee’s Ukraine Appeal. Efforts like these have helped the DEC raise over £300 million so far. We reported on the announcement of the exclusive whiskies back in April, so we are thrilled to hear that Glenfiddich has raised a staggering £150,000.
The exclusive whisky
Out of all the available bottles, the bidding for bottle number one became the centre of attention. On average, each bottle sold for roughly £320, however bottle #1 was the outlier as the bidding finished at £5,601.
More about the whisky
In case you missed the article we posted, we did a full comprehensive rundown of the Special Spirit of Speyside Edition 2022. Here’s what you should know:
- The whisky has an abv of 60%
- It comes in a 70cl bottle with a wooden case signed by Brian Kinsman
- It was made by picking whisky from three types of barrel virgin American oak, ex-bourbon oak and refill American oak
This mixture of whisky barrels has created a unique and rather sweet whisky. Reportedly it tastes like toasted pecan, crystalised ginger and rice pudding. The scent profile is full of zesty fruitiness. On the nose, you can smell hints of peanut brittle, an abundance of vanilla oak and ripe red berry fruit.
What Glenfiddich has to say
Claudia Falcone, Glenfiddich’s global brand director, stated, “We are so happy that this year’s Spirit of Speyside exclusive bottling has succeeded in raising such a significant sum of money for such an important cause. The Disasters Emergency Committee is doing invaluable work in the region, and we hope that this contribution will assist in providing some relief to the families impacted by the conflict.”
