Glenfarclas Unveils Its Oldest Whisky Yet: A 70-Year-Old Single Malt

One of Scotland’s last family-owned distilleries, Glenfarclas, has reached a new pinnacle in its storied legacy. The Speyside-based producer has just released its oldest whisky to date — a remarkable 70-year-old single malt, distilled on 20 November 1953. With only 262 bottles available worldwide, this ultra-rare release comes with an equally impressive price tag of £20,000.

Handmade Over 70 Years Ago

This historic expression was originally laid down in first-fill sherry casks, tucked away in Glenfarclas’s traditional dunnage warehouses. Back in 1953, every step of the whisky-making process was done by hand — including the hand-turning of barley on the malting floors. That same craftsmanship continues to this day.

Stored under the watchful eye of generations of the Grant family, the cask has been ageing gracefully through decades of change, both in the world and within the whisky industry. Now, more than 70 years later, this spirit is ready to be savoured.

Limited Global Release

The 70-year-old Glenfarclas will be released in just 50 global markets, available exclusively through selected specialist retailers. Each bottle is presented in Glenfarclas’s understated red packaging, a nod to the distillery’s philosophy of letting the whisky speak for itself.

According to the distillery, this release represents the “pinnacle of the distillery’s legacy,” capturing the very essence of Glenfarclas through meticulous ageing and enduring tradition.

A Family’s Legacy in a Bottle

John Grant, chairman and fifth generation of the Grant family, called this whisky “a true milestone” for Glenfarclas.

“We take great pride in maintaining complete control over every aspect of production,” said Grant, highlighting the use of direct-fired stills, which contribute to the spirit’s robust and full-bodied character.

He emphasised that the decision to release this rare whisky was made “carefully and with great respect” for its long legacy, a sentiment echoed by distillery manager Callum Fraser.

True Glenfarcias

Fraser described the whisky as a “true Glenfarclas”, capturing the very DNA of the distillery.

“What we did 30 or 40 or even 70 years ago is very much what we still do today,” he said. “This whisky has waited seventy years to be enjoyed. Through wars, the reign of a queen and now a king, the world has changed — but this spirit has endured.”

It’s a rare and timeless testament to the power of patience and traditional craftsmanship.

Tasting Notes: Complexity in Every Drop

The Glenfarclas 70-year-old delivers a rich, layered tasting experience. The distillery describes its profile as:

  • Nose: Stewed fruits with a gentle touch of Speyside peat
  • Palate: Deep waves of dark chocolate, spiced dried fruits, treacle toffee, and rich coffee
  • Finish: Long, evolving, and “deeply satisfying

Each sip reveals new dimensions — a celebration of both time and technique.
