Gin Bothy Unveils Its First Whisky and a State-of-the-Art Distillery in Remote Scotland

Gin Bothy, the Angus-based distillery renowned for its award-winning gins, has taken a bold leap into the whisky market. With the launch of its first-ever whisky and a brand-new distillery in one of Scotland’s most remote locations, the company is set to make waves in the Scotch whisky industry.

A New Chapter: The Gunshot Whisky Range

Gin Bothy’s inaugural whisky release, the Gunshot Whisky Range, features an eight-year-old blend and a Scotch liqueur. These offerings mark the first steps in an ambitious plan by the Glamis-based company, which aims to produce a 12-year-old single malt at its new facility in Glen Prosen.

The distillery’s site, tucked between the Munros Driesh and Mayar along the historic smugglers’ road, offers a picturesque and fitting backdrop for this exciting venture.

A Sustainable Vision Backed by Investment

This venture follows substantial financial backing from Dark Blue Property Holdings, led by Dundee FC owners Tim Keyes and John Nelms, along with John Neace. This investment supports Gin Bothy’s commitment to sustainability and local sourcing, ensuring the distillery aligns with modern environmental standards.

Kim Cameron, director of Bothy Trading, emphasised the importance of this ethos:

“Keeping the distillery as environmentally sustainable as possible is key.”

The facility will eventually run on hydroelectric power, and ingredients for both the gins and whiskies will be sourced locally, reinforcing the company’s dedication to the environment and community.

Bringing Whisky Production to Glen Prosen

Set on land managed by Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS), the Glen Prosen distillery represents a significant milestone for the company. Kim Cameron shared her excitement:

“This is an amazing opportunity for Gin Bothy and the team. We are super excited to bring this to life at Glen Prosen.”

Production at the new site is already ramping up. Gin stills will be moved into the facility in the coming weeks, with full-scale whisky production slated to begin in 2025. The distillery is expected to produce around 300 barrels annually, with the flagship single malt planned for a 12-year maturation period.

Supporting the Angus Glens Economy

The distillery’s arrival in Glen Prosen aligns with Forestry and Land Scotland’s broader efforts to boost the local economy and create jobs in the Angus Glens. Christine Reid, FLS programme manager, expressed optimism about the partnership:

“We are excited to welcome The Gin Bothy into Glen Prosen. This new venture will support existing and new jobs in the area as well as foster sustainable tourism.”

The Future of Gin Bothy Whisky

Gin Bothy’s new chapter underscores a commitment to innovation, sustainability, and quality. As Kim Cameron looks ahead to the future, she acknowledges the scale of the undertaking:

“Whisky has been something I’ve always been keen to do, but I didn’t have the knowledge, team, or financial investment required. Now, with the right support, we can bring this vision to life.”

The Glen Prosen distillery represents a long-term, sustainable investment, one that will undoubtedly make its mark in both the whisky industry and the Angus Glens community.
