Duncan Taylor Unveils Aged Whisky Exclusive Releases With Rarest Edition Collection

Independent bottler Duncan Taylor Scotch Whisky has recently unveiled two extraordinary additions to its Rarest Edition Collection: a 41-year-old Miltonduff single malt and a 60-year-old blended whisky from Lochside Distillery.

These exceptional Scotch whiskies, held in the vaults at Duncan Taylor Scotch Whisky in Huntly, Aberdeenshire, are available through a ballot on the 21st of July 2024.

The 41-Year-Old Miltonduff

The 41-year-old Miltonduff single malt originates from a cask dating back to 1942, making it a true piece of history. This release coincides with the distillery’s 200th anniversary, marking a significant milestone.

Miltonduff single malts have been rare since the 1980s, making this release particularly special. The distillery, which was sold in 2005, is currently undergoing an extensive upgrade, adding to the anticipation surrounding this whisky.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Candied fruits (mandarin, orange, grapefruit, melon, pineapple, pears), dark chocolate-coated raisins, waxy comb honey and a soft musky note of old dunnage warehouses.
  • Palate: Soft and sweet with an oily texture, candied fruit skins and rinds, light delicate spices, old oak and dusty warehouse notes.
  • Finish: Drier than the palate, but polished and pleasant, layers of old oak and damp cigar tobacco in cedar wood boxes, overall with great length which is balanced, complex, and satisfying.

The 60-Year-Old Lochside Blended Whisky

Lochside Distillery, based in Montrose on the east coast of Scotland, operated from 1957 until its closure in 1992. The distillery was eventually demolished in 2004, making its whiskies increasingly rare and sought after.

The 60-year-old blended Scotch whisky from Lochside is renowned for its ‘rich and fresh’ aroma, with delightful notes of forest fruits. This blend preserves the legacy of a distillery that played a significant role in Scotland’s whisky history.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Rich and fresh with forest fruits (wild strawberry, raspberry, brambles), liqueur-filled chocolates, vintage leather jacket, and old sherry with a hint of aged soy sauce.
  • Palate: Fresh, dense and moderately fruity with oaky notes, background sweetness, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, and earthy rancio reminiscent of very old cognac.
  • Finish: Long and warming, no excess tannins or dryness, notes of liqueurs and chocolates. It is beautifully complex with dense fruit and balanced spices.

Limited Availability

The 41-year-old Miltonduff and 60-year-old Lochside whiskies are available through a ballot on the online retailer The Spirits Embassy.

The ballot remains open until midnight on 21 July, giving collectors and connoisseurs a limited window to secure these rare bottles.

Pricing and Exclusivity

Only 30 bottles of the 60-year-old Lochside are available, each priced at £4,495 (US$5,824). The 41-year-old Miltonduff is even rarer, with just 20 bottles on offer, priced at £1,795 (US$2,325).
