Hebridean distillery Bruichladdich has announced a groundbreaking release that pushes the boundaries of Scotch whisky production: the Bruichladdich X4+18 Edition 01, believed to be the world’s first quadruple-distilled 18-year-old Scotch whisky.
This bold expression marks the beginning of a four-part series exploring radical distillation methods combined with innovative cask maturation.
A Daring Experiment 18 Years in the Making
The X4+18 Edition 01 was first distilled in 2006 by former master distiller Jim McEwan, using a process far removed from traditional Scotch distillation. While Bruichladdich typically distils twice—and some Irish distillers are known for triple distillation—this spirit was distilled four times, reaching an extraordinary 85% ABV before being laid to rest in casks.
The whisky has spent 18 years maturing on Islay in a combination of premium Bourbon barrels and Rivesaltes wine casks, developing complexity and character over nearly two decades.

Limited to Just 2,400 Bottles
The distillery will release only 2,400 bottles of this inaugural edition, making it one of the most exclusive experimental whiskies Bruichladdich has ever produced. As the first instalment in a four-part series, it establishes the tone for what the distillery calls one of its most exciting innovation projects since its revival in 2001.
The next edition is slated for release in 2027, further extending the journey of experimental distillation.

“Innovation Hand-in-Hand with Elegance”
Current master blender Adam Hannett, who has overseen the final maturation and bottling stages, describes the whisky as the culmination of bold experimentation and long-term patience:
“Bruichladdich has never been afraid to push boundaries. X4+18 Edition 01 is the culmination of a daring experiment, 18 years of patience, and the perseverance of our Islay home… It shows that innovation can go hand-in-hand with elegance, excitement, and truly exceptional flavour.”
Hannett emphasised the rarity of quadruple distillation:
“Quadruple distillation is almost unheard of in whisky… We believe we’re the only distillery to have bottled a whisky distilled four times and brought it to market. The final bottling is completely unique and unlike anything else we produce.”
Tasting Notes
Bruichladdich highlights the expression as a “sublimely unique and pure whisky”, exhibiting a range of rich and complex flavours. Tasting notes include:
- Jammy red fruits
- Christmas cake spice
- Brazil nut richness
- Citrus marmalade brightness
This depth is credited to both its unusual distillation strength and its prolonged maturation in two distinct cask types.
A Historical Inspiration: The “Perilous Whisky”
The concept of quadruple distillation was inspired by a 17th-century account from travel writer Martin Martin, who described a potent island spirit known as “usquebaugh-baul”—or “perilous whisky”—distilled four times to extraordinary strength.
Jim McEwan revived this ancient idea in 2006, creating a handful of cult releases over the years such as:
- X4+3 Perilous Spirit (2009)
- Octomore Discovery (2014)
- Octomore X4+10 (2019, 70% ABV and sold out instantly)
X4+18 Edition 01 represents the most mature and refined version of the experiment to date.
Meeting the Demand for Rare and High-Concept Whisky
The release arrives at a time when collectors and enthusiasts are increasingly drawn to unusual, experimental, and limited-edition spirits. Bruichladdich’s new chapter in distillation innovation is expected to generate strong interest among whisky lovers worldwide.
With three more editions scheduled within the four-part series, the X4 project is set to remain a focal point of conversation in the world of premium Scotch whisky.
