Ballantine’s Unveils Chapter Two of its Masterclass Collection: A Rare Whisky Gem
Whisky enthusiasts, prepare to raise your glasses! Ballantine’s has introduced the second chapter in its prestigious Masterclass Collection, aptly named Chapter Two: The Waiting.
This exclusive 40-year-old Scotch whisky showcases the brand’s rich heritage, combining artistry, tradition, and a touch of modernity. With only 108 bottles available worldwide, this limited release is a rare treasure for collectors and connoisseurs.
A Blend Four Decades in the Making
Crafted from casks laid down in the 1980s, The Waiting is the result of meticulous selection and blending by Ballantine’s current Master Blender, Sandy Hyslop. The foundation of this whisky, however, dates back to the craftsmanship of former Master Blender Jack Goudy. Bottled at cask strength (45.4% ABV), this release is designed to capture the intricate depth and complexity that Ballantine’s is celebrated for.
According to the brand, the influence of American Oak casks plays a significant role in shaping the whisky’s profile. Expect a delightful balance of sweetness intertwined with a subtle, smoky finish, making The Waiting a sensory experience like no other.
The Master Blender’s Philosophy
Sandy Hyslop, who has spent over 40 years with Ballantine’s, emphasises the meticulous process required to craft such a whisky.
“Time brings distinction to a whisky, but it also brings huge responsibility. You need a combination of patience, passion, and dedication to meticulously monitor and nose hundreds of samples a day to pinpoint the exact moment that a flavour profile has reached its maximum potential. It has to be exactly right because there’s no turning back the clock,” he explains.
The level of care and expertise required to maintain the quality of a whisky aged for over four decades is extraordinary. According to Hyslop, patience is the cornerstone of crafting such a prestigious blend.
Availability
With only 108 bottles available, The Waiting is priced at an eye-watering US$12,000 per bottle. While this might seem steep to many, Ballantine’s notes that the collection appeals to a niche audience. The rarity of whiskies aged 40 years or more justifies its exclusivity.
“This collection attracts a very particular consumer, with supply matching demand for an exquisite release at this price point,” the brand shared.
Masterclass Collection
The Waiting follows the 2023 release of Chapter One: The Legacy, forming part of a planned five-part series. Chapters Three and Four are expected in 2025 and 2026, respectively, with the final chapter slated for 2027 to mark Ballantine’s 200th anniversary.
Releasing a whisky of this calibre presents significant challenges. As Hyslop notes, ensuring the cask quality over four decades while honouring the work of previous Master Blenders requires unparalleled precision and patience.
Unique Display Box
To complement the craftsmanship of the whisky itself, each bottle of The Waiting is presented in an individually numbered display box. The bespoke packaging features intricate 3D paper art designed by Scottish artist Kyla McCallum, adding a touch of elegance to this already luxurious release.
An Exciting Time for Rare Whisky Collectors
Ballantine’s launch comes during a time of growing enthusiasm for rare whiskies. Despite rising prices, demand remains strong, with average prices for rare whiskies up by 13% compared to 2023. The Waiting is poised to become a highlight for collectors looking to own a piece of Ballantine’s storied legacy.
Available globally at specialist retailers from December 2024, The Waiting is a perfect addition to any whisky enthusiast’s collection.
